Community Awareness to Stop Fear, Stigma

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Thanks to your generous support, Development Alert has continued conducting community awareness activities aimed at helping families understand Ebola and respond to the outbreak with accurate information rather than fear and misinformation.

The current Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has placed enormous pressure on communities in the DRC. The outbreak has now become the deadliest Ebola outbreak in DRC history, with 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 deaths reported as of August 16, 2026. Uganda has recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths, while no new confirmed Ugandan case has been reported since June 21.

In such an environment, fear can spread almost as quickly as misinformation. Communities need trusted information about symptoms, transmission, prevention, early reporting, treatment, and how to support affected families without discrimination.

Development Alert's community-based approach provides an opportunity to discuss these issues openly with residents. We encourage people to ask questions, share concerns, challenge misinformation, and understand why early reporting and appropriate medical care are essential.

For families, this support provides reassurance during an uncertain period. It also helps reduce stigma, which can otherwise discourage people from reporting illness or seeking care.

Your generosity is helping communities replace fear with knowledge and uncertainty with preparedness. Thank you for standing with Development Alert as we work to protect families, strengthen community resilience, and support the wider Ebola response in Uganda and neighboring communities.
