How are you doing? I hope the summer (for those in the northern hemisphere, of course) is not too hot, too wet or too dry. All being well those in the southern hemisphere are gradually emerging from the winter months.
In our last report, I told you about the extra needs our partner organisation along with our local coordinator have identified for the girls. When I shared this information with her, one of my neighbours responded by offering to host a garden party to raise some of the money required for funding a workshop for the girls. The idea is to give the girls the opportunity to meet the young women who finished high school earlier and who went on to study at university (and in some cases even took on post-graduate education). The graduate students will serve as proof that the younger girls can achieve a lot themselves if they work hard. The older girls will be a potential resource for the high school cohort, potentially acting as mentors to them. In addition, the younger girls will hopefully enjoy meeting each other and together learn aspects of life skills and get some careers guidance.
The garden party took place on Sunday 23rd July and it raised over £2000 ( roughly M45000 in the local currency). My neighbours and their friends attended the party. Those who could not attend still made donations toward it. A good time was had by all who came. Neighbours that didn’t already know each other got to meet and everybody made new connections.
The money the event raised will help us meet the cost of this year’s workshop for our student cohort. This workshop event is actually taking place over this very weekend. Our local coordinator has already reported that the girls are excited to get this opportunity to broaden their knowledge and interact with girls from other schools in a learning environment.
I would like to conclude by once more applauding your amazing generosity and kindness in helping the girls on their journey to a bright future. We truly appreciate what you’re doing and I can confirm the girls feel the same.
You really are awesome!
Gratefully,
Liphethiso Monica
