Horseracing Wrongs is an organization that exposes the animal cruelty and animal killing in the horseracing industry in the United States through research and investigation. We are working to end the industry through public education, working with national media outlets, empowering and assisting advocates across the United States to be a voice for the horses by holding demonstrations at racetracks and contacting legislators to protect horses from cruelty for gambling and entertainment.
Horseracing as sport is a notion so deeply ingrained in our national consciousness that we hardly give it a second thought. The truth is racing's very core - is ugly and mean; it is confinement and isolation, needles and syringes, bits and whips. And it is oh so very deadly: Through our seminal FOIA reporting, we estimate that over 2,000 horses are killed racing or training on American tracks every year. And the great majority are slaughtered for meat - multiple thousands - annually.
Exposing the cruelty through public education will put pressure on legislators to change laws regarding how horseracing is funded thorough many states that subsidize the industry with taxpayer dollars. Educating the betting public with inspire people to move away from gambling on animals and move on to slot machines or sports betting - forms of betting that are widely available in many states - to not participate in animal cruelty.
Thousands of thoroughbreds, standardbreds, and quarterhorses will be saved from confinement, whipping, drugging and doping, painful injuries and slaughter. With more public education we will be able to continue to promote rescue and adoption of these magnificent animals whose natural life spans should be 20- 25 years. (Racing they are sometimes lucky to reach the age of 6 years old,)
