Summary

Facing the worst drought in 60 years, Somali families are fleeing famine and starvation. Many mothers have faced the horror of burying their children too weak to make the long trek to refugee camps in Kenya. Those who arrive in the overcrowded camps often remain at risk of dying of malnutrition and dehydration. MADRE will provide our partners Womankind Kenya with food, supplies, and aid to save the lives of malnourished families escaping the famine in Somalia.

Challenge

The Horn of Africa is facing the worst drought in 60 years, and famine has been declared in Somalia. Those who flee to refugee camps in neighboring Kenya find that the camps are overcrowded, and food and water is scarce. With as many as 1,000 refugees arriving daily, families in the camps remain at risk of dehydration and malnutrition, especially children.

Solution

MADRE's working with our partners Womankind Kenya to respond to the crisis in Somalia. We're providing urgent aid like calorie-dense, nutritious food, emergency water supplies, health kits with medicines to fight diarrhea and infections, and oral re hydration salts. We are also providing training for mothers to detect the signs of malnutrition in their children. With your help, we can give our partners the resources to help them feed another baby and to keep another mother from grieving the loss

Long-Term Impact

Across the Horn of Africa, droughts and failing harvests are becoming a recurring phenomenon-but immediate relief coupled with community-led clean water initiatives can help people survive these unprecedented rates of malnutrition and starvation. MADRE also supports an agricultural and a water project in Kenya, helping families in the famine to build thriving communities and weather future disasters.
