Educate &empower Adolescent girls in rural Uganda

Progress report for Hope for Children’s Health Foundation on Nutrition Support-28-12-2019

Background

Hope for Children’s Health Foundation is currently implementing Health and Education programs among the nationals in Kyangwali Subcounty and so far we have supported 30 orphaned children and adolescents to access better education in the surrounding primary schools by paying for them school fees and providing scholastic and sanitary materials and we have more 68 orphans and vulnerable children who need our support, currently we have reached 6 villages in Kyangwali and 15 more to go. Through a holistic approach we have been able to reach 43 care givers of these beneficiaries in our outreach programs and supported them with economic strengthening programs.

There is a target to reach 68 Orphans and Vulnerable children to be supported under the OVC program if we reached our fundraising goal through Global Giving.

Achievements

Hope for Children’s Health Foundation was able to implement a Nutrition program-providing food rations to severely malnourished children under this project, 3 beneficiaries were supported and are progressing very well and the relationship between the organization and community structures has made us achieve all these targets.

Gap/challenges

• There are currently 25 young people out of school who need to be supported with vocational skills trainings such that they can be self-employed and get income to sustain themselves and their families.

• We have 68 orphaned children who need to be provided with scholastic materials and have their school fees paid as well such that they can have access to better education. We have more 10 malnourished children who need support

On my behalf and that of my team we would like to thank our donors and well-wishers, Community development officers, local leaders, village health teams and expert clients, for their support during the project implementation and we are indeed grateful because we could not have reached this far without your support and also request you our donors, well-wishers, individuals who can help with supporting us start the vocational skills training program to our 25 young people who have finished Secondary education and they are staying home due to lack of school fees to have a better future, we hope there is need to empower and support them get the technical skills and be self-employed to create a difference in the lives of their families.

The HIV/AIDS and other diseases have left many children without parents or one of them in Kyangwali Village in Hoima & Kikuube districts. Many Families are headed by elderly grandparents and young people. It is also a common thing to find orphaned children living with HIV/AIDS, having acquired it from their parents during delivery. Hope for Children’s Health Foundation previously conducted a needs assessment and decided to start up an education program for the young girls and give them a bright future.

The survey discovered the following were most pressing needs of orphans and vulnerable children; • Education especially for basic and vocational education.

• Life skill and counselling for orphans.

• Capacity to meet the basic needs of the orphans.

• Capacity building for the caregivers to take care of the HIV positive children.

The primary aim of the project is to assist orphans and other vulnerable children realize their full potential through strengthening the capacity of the local institutions and structures to be able to respond effectively to the socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS through education and good health service delivery.

This has been possible through; Strengthening the capacity of the relevant community institutions and structures through training of OVC to meet the socio-economic needs of orphans and vulnerable children in a sustainable way ,Establishing or strengthening linkages between the community institutions and structures with the various public services such as education and health training institutions, enhancing the opportunities for the AIDS orphans and vulnerable children for appropriate training and Income generating ventures. ,enhancing the level of awareness on HIV/AIDS and promote positive behaviour change in order to reduce the rate of transmission and the prevailing social stigma associated with the pandemic and Hope for Children’s Health Foundation has been Facilitating advocacy and lobbying for recognition and support for the rights of AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children.

We have been able to provide scholastic materials to orphans and vulnerable children and 27 children and adolescents have benefited so far from the program and our target is to support the remaining 71 young girls as well and we believe with additional funds we shall achieve this target.

Challenge

Limited funds to pay for school fees for all the beneficiaries and also carry out other activities as per our work plan.
