This project will help provide education, nutrition, and healthcare to the girl child with an aim of improving enrollment and retention of girls missing out of school in a very rural area of Kyangwali in Uganda. The rural areas of Hoima district are characterized by severe poverty, harmful cultural and traditional attitudes, beliefs and practices such as early marriage, and poor management of sexual maturation, impact of HIV/AIDS at household level, teenage pregnancy, dis-empowerment of girls.
In Uganda, especially in a very rural area of Kyangwali educating girls is not a priority and approximately 35% of girls drop out of school because of early marriage and 23% drop out due to pregnancy and 21.4% due to poverty . Although, the government of Uganda is committed to girl education, funds allocated in the national budget to the education sector is low . This project will support young girls to get scholastic materials, attain better education, healthcare and get meals while at school.
The project will provide 98 orphans and vulnerable children with life essentials such as food, uniforms, medical care and more so education as the only means for pulling them out of poverty. Educated girls are more likely to invest back into their families and we would see a reduction in child marriages, poverty and early births. Young girls who are well-fed, have clean water, and are healthy are more successful in school. Only a holistic approach that supports the entire child can be successful.
Girls remain in school allowing them to have access to continuous education and sustainable solutions. This effects current and future generations of women and men, playing an imperative role in breaking the cycle of poverty. Communities are empowered to discuss and provide feminine hygiene, health and sanitation for themselves and others. One woman recently said, "It is as if it is taboo to be a woman." This program changes that with simple, direct and effective solutions that empower.
