Continuing Cancer Treatment in Ukraine

By Liudmyla Korol | Communication Officer

Distribution of Oncology Medications

In January, within the framework of the Mission Kharkiv – Ukraine Cancer Relief project, 77 distributions of oncology medications were carried out across two regions.

51 distributions took place in Kharkiv and 26 in Lviv, ensuring access to treatment for patients in both frontline and relocation areas.
In total, patients received 327 units of life-saving medicines.

Regular and timely access to oncology medications is critically important, as interruptions in treatment can significantly affect its effectiveness and patient prognosis. In the context of war, access to medicines remains unstable, making this support essential for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Why This Support Matters: A Patient Story

The name has been changed to protect privacy.

Viktoria has been receiving support from Mission Kharkiv since March 26, 2025. As part of her treatment, she currently receives trastuzumab and previously received docetaxel and cyclophosphamide.

Viktoria is from Kharkiv and did not leave the city even during periods when it was close to a semi-siege. She works as a veterinarian, although everyone in her family were doctors, she consciously chose a profession focused on caring for animals. She is raising 15-year-old twin daughters and is also caring for her mother, who recently suffered a stroke.

During one of our conversations, Viktoria was cooking dinner for her mother and daughters, who were about to return home. This ordinary domestic moment vividly reflects her reality, daily care for loved ones despite undergoing intensive cancer treatment herself.

Viktoria clearly remembers the beginning of her cancer journey. On February 15, 2025, a Saturday, she discovered a lump in her breast during self-examination. The following Monday, she visited her family doctor and was referred to an oncologist. Since March 2025, she has been able to start and continue treatment with trastuzumab thanks to the support of Mission Kharkiv.

When asked what she would like to say to donors and partners who make this treatment possible, Viktoria responds very modestly. She emphasizes the importance of continuing this support, fully understanding how difficult and in some cases impossible, treatment would be without access to essential medications. At the same time, she is aware that many other patients are still waiting for the same opportunity.

Viktoria’s story is just one of many, yet it clearly illustrates why support for oncology patients is truly life-saving. For people living with cancer, uninterrupted treatment means a chance for life, stability, and hope for the future.

Thanks to the donors and partners of the Mission Kharkiv – Ukraine Cancer Relief project, patients receive not only vital medications but also reassurance that they are not facing their illness alone. In the challenging conditions of war, this support has a real and measurable impact on people’s lives.

We are sincerely grateful for the trust and assistance that allow us to continue providing life-saving oncology medications and supporting patients on their path to recovery.
