When times are difficult for our beloved planet, it is so important that each of us connect with the Light within, and exude energy and actions that thru interconnectedness have enormous power. Keep Heart... Keep Light... Pray.

My Teacher, my Guru, used to say, "Drishti shristi". The world is as you see it. You can be in a Heavenly Abode and be bummed out. You can be in a virtual Hell Realm and be okay. Everything--everything--depends on your Inner State.

We may not be able to change the world directly, but by connecting with those light-filled memories, thoughts and feelings we can uplift our own Inner State. Then, by putting that higher energy out, we can help others. And they in turn can pass it on. And on, and on. Om Namah Shivaya.

This Report, like many of the others, gives an overview of the energy our Work has generated to lift suffering from both the animal realm and the human realm.

I will also talk about the importance of the relationship the street animals have with the people amongst whom they live.

OUR STATS SINCE OPENING - JANUARY 2007 THRU MARCH 31, 2022 (Please note that the year is 2022, not 2023. It is very, very time consuming to keep cumulative stats. These times are profoundly busy, so we offer these figures to give a good sense of the level at which we operate.)

MONTHLY (these figures are current!), we:

Treat 800 to 1500 out-patients in the Clinic, most of whom are “owner dogs”.
Give 1500 to 3000 treatments to in-patients, almost all of whom are homeless dogs.
Go out on 40 to 70 emergency rescues.
Perform 100 to 125 sterilizations.
Give 130 to 250 anti-rabies injections.
Place 8 to 20 puppies in good homes.
Treat 100 to 200 animals other than dogs.
(Mostly cows, calves, goats, sheep, and cats...but many others too.)

And now to the importance of the relationship the street animals have with the people amongst whom they live.

It's the transformation of that relationship I'm talking about, and the astoundingly profound national significance it has for both animals and humans.

We're only a small group. We don't know what's happening everywhere. There are thousands of homeless dogs, young and old in Tiru. Hundreds of monkeys, cows, goats, and other creatures wandering around. (That's not even mentioning the thousands of birds, deer, squrrels, snakes, and others...) And there are currently 200,000 people in Tiru.

We simply cannot care for all these creatures, truly uplifting the quality of their precious lives, without the Community.

The first year after opening it became clear there was no longer widespread abuse. After several more years all the animals appeared to be healthier and happier...even those we hadn't yet treated. All of them. It took time to realize that their relationship with the people was transforming...that the enormous effort we were putting into it was working, and that it was very, very important. And each year, that relationship was getting better.

There were many, many signs. People stroking street dogs, being loving to cows, goats, and others. Talking nicely to them, feeding them. Animals responding with warmth. Dogs with swishing tails. Smiles.

Many people commented. They'd never, in India, seen dogs more friendly. (Remember, too, that by then most of the homeless dogs were sterilized and had spent 6 days in the Shelter. And a number of them had spent time in the Shelter thru the clinic. And after exposure to us in the Shelter, the dogs were almost always more open to people.) It was the large number of Foreigners that come just for the cooler months, November thru February, who saw the transformation most dramatically after being absent for eight months. Many approach us to thank us for the amazing changes taking place.

There were other signs. The people bringing "owner dogs" to the Shelter were outwardly more loving. The way some people bringing emergency cases were involved with the creatures...and their expressions of gratitude.

An important comment I heard recently from a close friend is that he felt people were being nicer to each other. And that hits on something super important. The nature of the Heart. When the Heart truly opens, it opens in many directions. So if there's a real opening of the Community's Heart to animals, they'll be nicer to each other, too.

Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote of, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." is really about the Heart. If humans are good to animals, then they're being good to each other, too.

It's actually an effective way of uplifting human populations. May the Government recognize this and channel more resources.

What's happening is beyond anything I could ever have imagined back in the early days of the Shelter.

We have to do this together. It is together that the quality of life of the Precious Ones can most effectively be lifted.

I am truly humbled by the extraordinary power of love, commitment, and perseverance of Dr. Raja and Vishwa...and I am so deeply touched by the Staff. So little of what's going on now depends on me. At times I feel inadequate...Om Namah Shivaya.

What a blessing it is to be able to lift suffering from even one creature. What a blessing it is to experience the blessing of being able to do it.

Here are the Rescue stories. Many of you tell us this is your favorite part.

We received a 4pm call at the Shelter. A dog was running around with a horribly infected head injury. Dharma and Pandi went out. It was a young male. He was only about 8 or 9 months old and small, about 9kg. He was in pain and afraid. It took a half hour to catch him. Both Dr. Raja and Dr. Mahesh worked on him. The wound was really awful...infected with 100's of maggots and smelled bad. They gave him a strong painkiller, cleaned the wound, and put medication on to kill the maggots. After several days, the young sweetie was put on the veranda where he bonded with everyone and straight away started playing with the other dogs. We've had him 10 days at the writing of this note, and he's healing nicely. In another week or two we'll put him back in his territory. He'll be very happy. There are some people there who love and care for him. But he roams free...Om Namah Shivaya.

When Vishwa was out in the car, he passed a dog about 30 to 40kms out. The sweetie had a bad skin problem. Most of his hair was gone. He had sores and bumps over his entire body. And he was badly undernourished. Vishwa got him using milk and cookies. Dr. Mahesh treated him--a wound on his back right leg--and gave him an i.v. The babe then got a good medicated bath, and his body was covered with ointment. He went into quarantine for 3 days, then onto the veranda. He liked all the Staff, and played with the other dogs. We've had him a week. His skin is much better, but his hair is slow in coming back. His leg is healed, but we'll keep him at least another month and then put him back in his territory. There's a temple and small water tank there. And there's a man who likes and cares for him...Om Namah Shivaya.

An older Heart story from a few years ago....I was walking on a side street and some fellow called me over. There was a pup about a month old lying motionless on her side in the sun. The man had been standing there watching her, and asked me if she were alive. A bad skin condition. And pretty thin. I knelt down and put my cheek against hers. And there was life.
I gently picked her up. Kissing her, I said, "You need help sweet girl. I'm going to take you to a very good place where there are only good people who will love and care for you."
At the Shelter, we put her in a basket under the sink in the clinic. Chants playing over the speaker. A lot of activity. Several other pups snuggled her from time to time. And she started her journey back.
Slowly her coat started coming in. Her energy started coming back. And after a week she was looking around with interest. A week later, she was starting to go on little excursions around the clinic. She responded with love to love. And she remembered me. Whenever I go to the Shelter, she comes to me. I hold her to my Heart. Kiss her. And tell her how happy we are.
This is the joy continually happening that comes to us blessed to do this Work.

Another older Heart story...This one is really beautiful. It's about an "old guy"(hmm!!! The connection between the two of us just occurred to me: two old guys!) It was during the day. A nice day. Sun. Pleasant temp. I passed him on my two-wheeler. He was lying on his side under one of those wooden lane dividers. No hair. Cadaverously thin. Unmoving. He seemed dead. I pulled over, bent down, put my cheek against his, and stroked him to see if there was any life. Yes! I called Vishwa. He and Pandi came out and took him to the Shelter.
This guy was a "broken creature". Emotionally he just seemed dead.
After a week he started walking around. Solitary. Not connecting with any other creatures or Staff. It was astonishing as I saw him "coming back"--the rate at which his coat came in, the weight he gained, the strength he gained. And then after a month or so, soft light started coming into his eyes. Whenever I'd come in, even early on, he'd come up to me and put his cheek against my leg. I'd hug him, kiss him, and softly talk to him. I mean it was Vishwa and Pandi who picked him up and took him to safety, food, and caring. I just put my cheek against his for a minute or two. But that precious guy remembered.
He is strong and soft now. His coat is fully in. His eyes are soft, "cow eyes". And he's quietly very loving.
You might wonder his age. We think ten or eleven. When we found him he seemed forty-three.

Also, in this one, I want to share with you an exchange I had with Vishwa that was so deeply moving, I could barely talk when it was over.

And now to my exchange with Vishwa... It came about because I was reading one of my Reports which said, "We give 1800 to 3000 treatments monthly to in-patients, almost all of whom are homeless dogs." The 1800 figure seemed a bit high. But it was still just a figure to me when I called Vishwa. He was at the Shelter and I told him my concern. So we went over the estimate.

I asked him how many in-patients we presently had. "180, Sir."

"Okay...How often do they get bathed?" Amazingly enough, every dog and puppy is bathed once every 10 days."So Vishwa, that means that each of the 180 is bathed three times a month, and we give 540 baths a month?" "Yes Sir."
We have 20 dogs who get injections every other day. That's 20x15 injections a month, or 300 treatments.
We have 20 dogs who get a pill once a week. That's 20x4 pills a month, or 80 treatments.
We have 20 dogs who get lotion applied every 4 days. That's 7 lotion applications a month, or 20x7 treatments.
We have 2 adult dogs with broken backs who get spinal injections once a week. That's 2x4 injections, or 8 treatments a month.
We have 5 puppies with broken backs, They get spinal injections every other day...and massages every day. So each month they're EACH getting 15 injections and 30 massages, or 45 treatments. That's 5x45 or 225 treatments a month.
We have 2 blind dogs who get eye drops every day or 2x30, or 60 treatments a month.

I asked him how we kept track. "They have numbers, sir."

I was so moved at the care they were giving, I could barely talk.

We've been going for over 16 1/2 years now.

Starting early on, I would give periodic talks to our Staff. I'd tell them it was vitally important for the animals to feel safe, cared for, and loved in order for deep healing to take place.
And they were told that it wasn't just me that the Voiceless Ones got this love from. It wasn't just Vishwa. It wasn't just Dr. Raja. It was from them, the Staff. And theirs was the most important. Day after day. All day long.
And no one could tell them how to do it. It had to be an expression of their own Hearts. Everyone does it differently, and they had to find their own way of relating. The animals can tell the difference between someone just "being nice" to them and when it's a real expression of relationship.
The animals, the Voiceless Ones, have not been put into a setting where there are rules and things to do, ways to spend their days imposed by a "Superior Race". They are an active part of how things evolve. They don't only receive "affection and niceness". It ebbs and flows as part of a real relationship. And they are truly happy. They have lives full of choices.
I was a part of this unfolding. But the other thing, above...of the baths...the extensive treatments...the injections...the sheer amount of physical caring...that is what blew me away. And I had nothing to do with it. That was an expression of Dr. Raja and Vishwa...thru the Staff. Even if a dog gets a sore foot, it's taken care of.
Bless them. Bless all of them. Bless them. Bless them. Bless them. Surely God must be pleased with them...Om Namah Shivaya.

The Staff have been told again and again that they don't have to look busy when I come in. I can tell by the energy how things are going. And even tho' I may or may not interact with them, I'm very aware of each of them.

But when people visit the Shelter, they're often struck by how focused our guys are in the Work.

How hard they work.
How beautiful they are with the dogs.
And how the dogs love them.

I am so, so Grateful...

In prior Reports I've written about rescue stories that Vishwa would pass on to me. And I believe that for many of you, it was your favorite part. But in this one I'm also going to cover the beautiful story of an emegency case from ten years ago that I recently came across. I wrote about it to Margot in Aust\ralia who is one of us...really one of us....So here goes the August 2013 letter.

"Hi dear Margot...So many things happening. When your precious Self gets here, you'll see what I mean. (Just realized that I'm going to put you on our Prayer List.)

About a week ago, late night, we got an emergency case brought in by a rickshaw driver (bless him). It was a small black puppy that he found lying on the side of the road. He was still alive, but in deep shock. He apparently had been attacked by an adult dog, and had several external wounds, none of them really serious. One, though, was on the throat and it crushed his trachea a little. He hovered between life and death a couple of hours. The big thing was the deep shock he was in.

I held him a long while. Kissed and stroked him. Chanted soft mantras into his ear. And whispered repeatedly, "I love you". Dr. Raja gave him an I.V. with an anti-biotic, a pain killer, and neurobion for nutrition, along with a steroid injection for the shock. He made it through. But for four days (we kept him in a basket in the clinic) his eyes held terror. He stayed in the corners with his head in the corner--any place he could hide and disappear. He couldn't respond to anyone...touch or gentle sounds. Ramesh gave him special attention throughout the night.

Yesterday afternoon we decided to put him in a pen with seven other young puppies. We were hoping that being only with small gentle creatures would bring him out of his Hell. But he stayed in corners with his head pointed in. And there was still terror in his eyes. Some of the puppies would come up and sniff him, but he was afraid. He was afraid if anyone touched him or gently talked to him. Dr. Raja was also treating him with two Bach Flower remedies (one for known fear; the other for unknown fear). I started becoming afraid that it was permanent.

But this morning, in the pen with the puppies, he came out of the corner and was sitting on a mattress. His eyes were softer, and he started looking around. And then he started responding to beloved PureHeart Sekar, one of our Staff.....Thank you, God.

Afternote...It took him a month or two to really get over the trauma. Then Vishwa found a beautiful forever home for him. He was very Happy. Om Namah Shivaya.

And here are some more recent rescues from our beloved Vishwa.

A young monkey.

Got a 4pm call at the Shelter from a sadhu on Pradakshina Road. A 2 wheeler had hit a young monkey. Pandi and Ravi went out. It was a male about a year old and in shock. He had a nasty flesh wound on his back leg. Dr. Raja gave him a painkiller and antibiotics, then dressed the wound. They put him in isolation for 4 days, where he bonded with Arunagiri. Then he was put with Wally, another one year old monkey, in the large cage. At this writing he's been up there with Wally for 10 days and is very happy. Also, two other one year olds, Rama and Sita, have been put in the cage. There are adult monkeys from the outside coming to visit them thru the cage. In a month or two, if it seems they have formed a family group, we'll release all of them...and, of course, monitor them to make sure they're okay. Om Namah Shivaya.

We got a 6pm call at the Shelter from a provision stand owner near the Collector's office (about 10 kms out). An adult female cat had a dog bite on her back. She was lying by the stand when Vishwa got there. She tried to move away, but she could only move slowly and it took only 5 minutes to catch her. Dr. Raja came in to treat her. She was in a lot of pain. He gave her injections, and cleaned and dressed the wound. It was an older wound that she had probably gotten 3 or 4 days ago. They put her in the big cat cage upstairs. Arunagiri is caring for her and she's bonded with him. The provision stand owner has come several times to visit with dry fish. We'll keep her another 2 or 3 weeks, then release her to the provision stand owner. She'll be very happy. Om Namah Shivaya.

Difficult times continue for our beloved Planet. No matter what's being debated on the outside, even if it's unsettling, it's important to go inside and connect with Light. It's all there. In memories. In feelings. In hopes. We must go inside and uplift our own Inner State. And if we put that Higher energy out, it affects those we come in contact with. And they, in turn, pass it on to those they come in contact with. And on and on.
My Guru...my teacher...many, many years ago during his lifetime, would give a short teaching each night. And he'd always begin with, "I welcome you All with all my Heart. This is my most important Practice...Welcoming another Being with love."

The stats are stunning - especially if you haven't before seen the level at which we are operating. But the important thing is HEART...HEART...HEART...It suffuses all of our Work.

It is so uplifting to experience the happiness of the animals in the Shelter. And as you walk around the Municipality, it feels so good to see the transformed relationship between the animals and the people.

We are amongst the very few shelters in the country, perhaps the only one, that runs 24/7 rescue. Any time of the day or night, within 125 kms, we will be there in a short time to rescue ANY precious one in need. AND we are the only ones who go out up to 100 kms to find good homes for puppies and dogs. Vishwa has trained several college students to search for these homes. (The students are so deeply moved by their Work, that they will only accept reimbursement for expenses.) At this point in time, we have placed over 1600 puppies and dogs, mostly puppies, in good homes. Om Namah Shivaya.

We've had a surge in street puppy births. It's significant. It's the result of fewer sterilizations over several years. For more than a year during the Covid intensity, we weren't allowed to catch dogs for sterilization...and then for several other reasons, the number we caught was low. We were doing about 40 sterilizations a month. Now we've increased that number to 100. And we're putting more energy into adoptions. It's a heavy additional load.

A really big factor is my decreased activity. I think I told you that Dr. Raja and Vishwa are running the Shelter, and it's stronger than its ever been. But we need help if we're going to survive long term. It's not a crisis. But I'm 86 now - in good health and not planning on "kicking off" soon. But 86 even looks old when I type it. Clearly this is the home stretch, and I'm the main person raising money.

A goodly portion of our operating funds are met by regular ongoing donations. However, it's beyond important that we build our donation base to take up the slack created by my imminent retirement. I feel we have 6 months to a year to do it. I am not talking about you increasing your donations, rather about the potential blessing it would be to us if you could bring in new solid supporters. This is what I am sincerely and respectfully asking of you. You truly understand the difference we make. Our total operating expenses are conservative, but they amount to around $12,500 each month....Om Namah Shivaya.

Here are some recent rescue stories from our beloved Vishwa (your favorite part, I believe):

A young hen. (This is a simple story, but something in it really moved me.)

The Shelter got a noon call from a distressed woman in a nearby village. She had a hen that was in a lot of pain trying to lay an egg that was too big to come out. Pandi went, and brought the hen to Dr. Raja, who gave her an injection and operated, making the hole a little larger. He took the egg out intact and finished with a few stitches. The lady took her hen home and called the next day to thank us. She donated all the eggs from her six hens over the next three weeks. She really, really loved her hen! Om Namah Shivaya.

A foreigner called the Shelter at 8;30pm. There was a dog near the large Shiva Temple with a badly infected wound around his entire neck. It was infested with hundreds of maggots. The wound was dripping pus and smelled awful! Vishwa and Jayakumar went in the car. The dog was a male, 4 years old, and in a lot of pain. (He had probably been in a big fight weeks before.) It was dark and he was fast. It took them 45 minutes to catch him. Dr. Raja gave him a painkiller and poured ivermectine over the entire wound to kill the maggots. Next morning, he removed the dead maggots, and again poured ivermectine to kill the remaining ones. Later in the day he thoroughly cleaned and dressed the wound. We kept him on the veranda for three weeks, where he bonded with PureHeart Sekar. The foreigner who had called came to visit him regularly. But he was very, very happy when we released him back into his territory. Om Namah Shivaya.

Vishwa got a 10pm call at his house that woke him. Someone had thrown a small puppy onto the side of the road about 50 kms out. The little sweetie was just lying there when Vishwa arrived. He was 1 1/2 to 2 weeks old. Starving. Very weak. Couldn't walk. Vishwa had taken puppy milk and a small bowl with him. The little one drank 100 ml of milk until his tummy was full. Vishwa took him home. Sundari, Vishwa's wife, cared for him. He was covered with ticks and she removed all of them. And put on tick powder. He slept on a small cushion next to her. We had him for two months. Then he was adopted into a good home, with two children--a boy and a girl, 3 or 4 years old. He was very happy. Om Namah Shivaya.

Vishwa got an 11am call from one of our "adoption boys''. He was 25 kms out. There was a 2 year old male dog with a wire from a trap wrapped around his right front leg. He was in a lot of pain, but he was very fast. It took them three hours to catch him. Vishwa took the wire off. It was a new wound and not yet infected. He put ointment on it and let him go. He was very, very, very, very happy...Om Namah Shivaya.
