In rural Guatemala, a girl's education often ends with primary school. Half of the girls who start it complete it, and only one in three finishes 9th grade; many are over-aged and at risk of dropping out for good. Families cannot afford supplies, uniforms and the cost of keeping a daughter in class instead of at work. FUNDAP's Scholarships for Girls addresses this in the highlands and southwest of Guatemala. This campaign funds three-year scholarships for 350 girls. Today, 25 are still unfunded.
Each scholarship covers a girl for three school years: a stipend for supplies, uniforms and shoes, twice-monthly training in reading, communication and math, tutoring, and regular visits to her family and school. Parents commit to keeping her in class. It works: in 2025, 99.95% of scholarship girls stayed in school and 99.05% passed their grade. $125 funds one girl for a year; $375 her full scholarship. More than 300 girls are already funded. We need $9,430 more to reach 350 by January 7, 2027.
Girls who stay in school longer earn more, gain independence and take part in family and community decisions. Each extra year of schooling delays early marriage and pregnancy and improves the nutrition of the next generation. Many former scholarship girls reach secondary school, technical training or formal jobs, and some return as tutors for younger girls in their communities. Completing this campaign means 350 girls in Guatemala finish three school years they would otherwise have lost.
