Opportunities for Study

By Beatriz Gandara | Project Leader

A Guatemalan tradition is the elaboration of carpets during Holy Week, representing folkloric and religious figures. These carpets are made with sawdust, palm leaves and other organic materials. To begin their elaboration, the design is chosen and wooden rulers are used to make the frame. After moistening the ground, enough sawdust is added to level the surface. Then the sawdust of the desired color is added to serve as a background and, finally, to give it a natural look, pine and corozo are added.

We also want our young girls to learn these skills, which are passed on in their families and communities. Every day, girls face obstacles in accessing education, due to poverty, cultural rules and practices, as well as lack of infrastructure, violence and fragility.

Girls’ education is a priority for our project; that is why we rely on “our methodological carpet” and awarding scholarships is one of the fundamental processes that takes several steps: Community survey, presentation of the scholarship program, home visits to know the context of the potential scholarship recipient, meeting with parents, collection of files, and we end with the confirmation of the scholarship.

The accompaniment of the scholarship project is not only limited to getting the girls to attend school, it is also about ensuring that they learn and feel safe while they are in school. Our goal is for them to have the ability to complete all levels of education, gaining the social-emotional and life skills that will enable them to function and adapt to an ever-changing world. We need them to have the ability to make decisions about their own lives, contributing to their community and the world at large. Thanks to your support, we are closer to achieving this.
