The pandemic has reached even the remotest of Achuar communities like it has the rest of the world. There are slightly less than 100 separate Achuar villages within their pristine territories in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our understanding is that the governing organization for these communities—Nacionalidad Achuar Ecuador (NAE)—has closed off their territories to outsiders. Our contacts have advised that many people have contracted Covid-19 and some have become very sick. We don’t know how many have died.
We continue to thank you for your generous contributions to the Achuar people. They face many challenges as they continue to live their traditional lifestyle—food production, water quality, population growth, education and healthcare among them. Your interest in their welfare is encouraging.
Thank you.
