We remain in touch with our friend Tiyua as the Achuar continue to experience the coronavirus pandemic. We saw Tiyua in January of this year, and he advised us that the Achuar have lost 5 community members to date. As in the rest of the world, several were elders. The loss of elders is particularly painful as a wealth of cultural information is lost as well.
Tiyua, who established Fundacion Ikiam, is currently serving as President of the Nacionalidad Achuar Ecuador (NAE). In December, we delivered to Tiyua the holiday gift packages to which you contributed. Attached is a photo of Tiyua receiving the 30 boxes in Puyo, Ecuador, the location of the NAE headquarters. We want to thank Harry and Carol for arranging and funding the transportation of these boxes from Cuenca to Puyo, a road trip that takes almost a full day.
Your contributions provided 300 children’s toothbrushes and 300 tubes of toothpaste, as well as the bags full of cookies and candies for the children.
Going forward, as the conditions of the pandemic allow, we hope to continue our efforts to assist the Achuar communities to meet their challenges of food production, water quality, population growth, education and healthcare. Tiyua told us that they have begun projects to establish fish farms in local communities. We will support these endeavors to provide a local food supply as well as a source of income.
