Challenge

Lack of Access to Sustainable Lighting in Island communities is a major development challenge and the Bomigo Island is no exception. Lack of lighting in the local clinic affects healthcare delivery, the community school without lighting affects children's education, high rate of youth migration due to low economic opportunities, low community lighting is a threat to security of women and girls. This project will impact the over 1500 inhabitants living on Bomigo Island and improve their lives.

Solution

ISEES provides sustainable energy technologies for rural and peri-urban off-grid communities, like Bomigo Island. The project will provide solar lighting for the clinic and school to improve health care for women and education for the children by encouraging posted medical personnel and teachers to stay in the community. It will also provide solar irrigation for year round farming by young farmers, improve security through street lighting to reduce risk of attacks and snake bite during evenings.

Long-Term Impact

The project will improve healthcare delivery by 60%. Educational standards will improve by about 300 children having the opportunity to learn each evenings. It will improve food security and economic livelihoods of the Bomigo Youth Association members through increased income from all year round farming with solar water irrigation, improve security through community streetlights and improve the living standards of the community members. It will also reduce youth migration to urban centers.
