Yuth, a 15-year-old boy in Grade 10 at Wat Svay Secondary School in Siem Reap Province, is a shining example of resilience and determination among Cambodian youth. His story reflects how education and culture can open a path of hope—not only for himself but also for his family.

Before joining Salvation Centre Cambodia (SCC) in Siem Reap, Yuth’s family faced serious financial hardship. His parents earned a small income by selling fish, which was not enough to cover school expenses. Despite these challenges, Yuth and his sister continued their studies with strong motivation and the belief that poverty should never stop them from learning.

Yuth’s journey into Khmer classical music began on October 5, 2016, at SCC. He chose to learn traditional music with the hope of turning it into a skill for his future—something that could both preserve Cambodia’s rich culture and help support his education and family.

After nearly ten years of learning and practice, Yuth has become a talented musician capable of performing many Khmer classical pieces. Today, he performs regularly with friends, especially during the festival seasons, earning about 70,000 Riel (USD 17.50) per performance. He usually joins four to five performances per season, using his income to support his studies and contribute to his family.

Yuth attributes his success to hard work and discipline—memorizing his lessons carefully, practicing daily, staying focused on rhythm, and avoiding distractions in class. These habits have built his confidence and self-reliance.

Looking ahead, Yuth dreams of becoming a Khmer classical music teacher and turning his passion into a full-time career. His story shows how access to education and cultural programs can change lives. Through Yuth’s dedication, Khmer classical music becomes not only a treasured cultural heritage but also a source of opportunity, dignity, and hope for the next generation.
