The Mbera refugee camp in Mauritania is home to approximately 120,000 Malian refugees, who have fled violence and instability in their home country. Over 55% of the refugees are under 18 years of age. Since 2019, RET has worked in Mbera to develop and support a formal education system, establishing schools, training teachers, and creating centers for afterschool activities, libraries, and even a dedicated computer lab to teach digital skills. Help us continue that mission.
Due to continued violence in Mali, large-scale returns are not anticipated, and the camp continues to see new arrivals. Therefore, refugee youth will spend important developmental years in the camp. Shortfalls in funding and shifting government priorities have meant that together we are at a critical juncture. This campaign is designed to provide direct support to our learning facilities and infrastructure in Mbera, ensuring that these refugee youth can continue learning - uninterrupted.
As of 2026, RET continues to work in Mbera, through several projects in collaboration with World Food Programme. This work focuses on basic family needs, like food security and ensuring adequate nutrition. However, funding for educational work through other donors has been suspended. Funding from this campaign will help bridge the gap and ensure that we can continue to support the educational system that is vital to Mbera's youth.
In 2024, in collaboration with UNHCR - the UN Refugee Agency, we conducted a large-scale educational assessment in Mbera and the surrounding areas. The study revealed that our efforts are working: Students in Mbera showed a much smaller learning gap than their peers in other parts of Mauritania. This means that they will have a higher chance of integrating into the national system, continuing their education, and breaking the cycle of poverty. Help us continue this important work.
