Gust 2 years old bends his fingers while counting his years, which - he would not fold so many on one hand. But the little boy doesn't have enough fingers on both hands to count the number of times he has had to get on a plane for a flight of hope to the best pediatric eye specialists in Europe.
For those who are getting to know Gust's story for the first time, I would like to remind you that when Gust was only a few months old, he was diagnosed with a rare malignant eye disease - retinoblastoma.
I really believe and hope that with the coming spring, little Gustuk will see the brighter rays of the sun that appear more and more often, the blue flowers of the first fireflies and the ever brighter colors of the world of childhood.
I am sharing Gust's mother Ugne's sincere and sensitive letter about the experience of her last trip to the doctor:
"In the date of this Gusto's eye treatment visit, more than ever (combinations of 2s and 3s). This 23rd visit was scheduled for 02/23/2023. During the visit, it was finally confirmed that she is expecting in the 3rd (i.e. March) month 2 visits (1st - routine at Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital, 2nd - additional due to annual pineal gland risk at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV)).
I am glad that the dates of the visits were arranged in the same week of March, so you will not have to travel to a foreign country twice in March.
The MRI scan results of this 23rd visit show that most of the tumor mass has disappeared in the left eye, but active tumor tissue remains in several places, which was destroyed by a combination of cold and laser therapies, and active tumor tissue in the right eye, no new foci were detected.
We travel through Gusto's life-disease path wearing our own shoes. Just as nothing in life blooms all year round, so it is the same in our hearts and minds, and sorrow sharpens its sword and the nails of pain pierce the heart.
But the more experiences we have, the more we understand, appreciate and cherish life. Time and silence heal, though scars remain. We smile at life because life is beautiful and has so much to smile about.
Have you noticed how beautifully the sky smiles at us, the trees waking up from their winter sleep, the charming melodies chirping by the sparrows chirping on the yard fence and how pleasantly the sun's rays caress your face?!
What an indescribable feeling of bliss includes how we can be at least for a moment in silence, how there is no need to rush anywhere, how to plan, how the eyes can enjoy the changing natural scenery and natural sounds.
And as the smallest member of the family - Gust - takes part in these activities and is gradually able to see and understand more details, life becomes even more beautiful. Happy spring everyone!
We sincerely thank you for not forgetting us and sincerely helping us on the path of illness.
