Gustukas is only two years old. For the same amount of time, the boy tries to tame the oncological disease (malignant tumor of the eye) that has visited him and to agree with it so that it goes away and leaves him forever.
All of us - doctors, Gusto's parents, those who support Gusto's trips to a treatment facility in Switzerland and those who send our best thoughts and wishes - believe that the little boy will succeed, because the faith of many people, which turned into a powerful one, united in one goal and hope.
I am already sharing 27 letters and experiences of Gust's mother Ugne's healing journey, trying to imagine what a difficult and strong experience the little boy and his family had to go through:
"As of this visit in May, Gust completed two years of treatment for malignant retinal tumors (retinoblastoma) in Switzerland.
Touched by a visionary dream, we resolutely step into the third, we cannot give up.
The results of this visit: the right eye is stable and calm, and the left eye has not completely destroyed a sizeable tumor (which was destroyed in the previous visit), so as planned, urgent, stronger intravitreal chemotherapy (injection of a chemical preparation (topotecan)) was once again applied to the vitreous body of the eye), and used cryotherapy treatment procedures to destroy small tumors.
Recovery from anesthesia was excruciating, with constant crying and distraction from the pain, but additional doses of pain medication helped to make her feel better.
These two years of treatment have changed everything, especially the thoughts, the sparkle in the eyes, the attitude towards yourself and the other person around you, it continues to strengthen the character and develop the will to experience.
Life cannot be planned, and not everything has a plan, especially illness. We don't know what lies ahead for Gust's disease in 2 weeks or a month, but we can decide how to live and act here and now, use the opportunities that life offers and enjoy the joy that we can feel and achieve.
We have something to be happy about every day, because DURING THE EFFORTS OF YOU AND THE SWISS DOCTORS, incredible TRANSFORMATIONS have taken place during two years of treatment due to intensively applied treatment procedures. Gust CAN SEE, not like everyone else, but he can, and this is the biggest and most priceless DREAM OF LIFE, WHICH HE MANAGED TO TOUCH.
Thanks to ongoing treatment, we hope to maintain this dream. We understand that this is how our life is already built, the flash of a moment - and everything can change. We each fight our own battle. I believe that this dream will be achieved, the disease will subside, but no one can answer whether we are already halfway there...
During the two years of treatment, the necklace of Gust's disease lengthened significantly (treatment procedures were applied more intensively, so the frequency of visits was higher compared to the first year of treatment).
After two years of treatment, we will start a new string of receiving "pearls of courage" (necklaces) (symbolizing the "reward" for each procedure Gusto has undergone), as the latter no longer fit.
We really want to congratulate and express our sincere THANKS to the Lithuanian family living in Switzerland, who tirelessly took care of us during the two years of treatment and provided us with free accommodation and useful advice in a foreign country. Heartfelt thanks to your family for this beautiful gift of friendship-fellowship-focus acquaintance and its development.
Also, special WARM WORDS OF THANKS TO ALL OF YOU for enthusiastically supporting/supporting us during the two years of illness and believing in Gusto's victory.
Sincerely,
Gusto's mother Ugne"
You can also contribute to the hope of recovery for Gust and his friends, who are being treated for malignant tumors of the eye in Swiss clinics.
