Green Shoots: Maths Beyond the Classroom

Dear Supporters,

At Green Shoots, we’re seeing something remarkable—learners voluntarily taking Maths beyond the classroom. Thanks to your support, South African learners have completed over 117,000 sessions of Maths Curriculum Online (MCO) in the first 5 weeks of term. They are doing this in their own time, choosing to do extra Maths because they want to!

Parents are witnessing this shift firsthand. One father shared a powerful story about his son, now in Grade 6, whose love for Maths skyrocketed thanks to MCO:

"Last year, when he was in Grade 5, he would come home and immediately get started with GS (Green Shoots). Every single day. Then, one day, I found something on the ground—certificates. I saw he was a top achiever in Mathematics. I called him over and asked, ‘What’s going on here?’ And he just said, ‘Oh, it’s nothing.’ I asked him, ‘Why don’t you tell us about the diplomas and awards you received?’ And he said, ‘Daddy, you know what? This is only a piece of paper. It’s all in the mind. That’s what matters most.’"

What struck this father most wasn’t just his son’s achievement—it was the confidence, the quiet pride, and the sheer love for maths that had taken root.

"The best part about GS is that he enjoys it as if it’s a game. I watch him, and he just flies through it, applying what he learned in school and challenging himself. And for that, I just want to say a very, very big thank you to Green Shoots. I’ve seen firsthand how this programme is changing children’s futures."

This is what your support is making possible. You’re not just funding a Maths programme—you’re building a culture where learners see Maths as an opportunity, not a barrier. With instant feedback, engaging challenges, and a system that meets them where they are, MCO is inspiring children to push themselves further, and they love it.

We know that Maths is a gateway to future careers, and thanks to you, more South African learners are stepping confidently through that gateway every day.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.
