With the end of 2017 approaching, the often daunting year-end assessments are about to commence. This year though, there does seem to be a positive shift in the attitude of many of the learners at the Green Shoots supported schools.
Normally, an assessment written on a whole year’s work could be overwhelming for leaners! The 1 394 Green Shoots learners at Mzamomhle and Jamaica Way Primary schools, the two supported by the Global Giving: Help more South African Children Achieve in Maths project, have collectively answered over a million Brain Quest Questions (weekly exercises) collectively online over the course of this year. The learners received immediate feedback on every one of these questions!! All this hard work throughout the year, supported by their teachers, means there is definitely more excitement than dread for next week’s assessment.
“The biggest impact thus far has been the learners' interest in Maths. The overwhelming majority of learners- regardless of Mathematical ability- look forward to Maths lessons in and out of the Lab. The majority of learners take their results seriously and will ask questions about parts of the activities that they found difficult.” – Grade 4 Teacher, Mzamomhle Primary
“Since I started doing Brain Quests I got better at doing maths and solving problems and I got at least a 6 (70 – 79%) on my report I was so proud of myself that my mother and I threw a party” - Ayanda, Grade 4 learner, Mzazmomhle Primary
“I like explaining to my friends and working out the answers. Sometimes if I miss my Green Shoots lesson I become so sad because I love it and I love Maths.” - Samuel, Grade 6 learner, Jamaica Way Primary
Thank you for your ongoing support for this project. Your donations truly make a difference to each and every one of these learners.
