Summary

The Emergency Response Initiative will formally educate & train a mountain community with 600 families, who have acted as first responders to natural disasters, seasonal hurricanes & pandemics. The vulnerable community is isolated. The community must create a plan that includes a structure to store secured shovels, rain gear, go bags, training materials, care packages & emergency response packets to ensure the community's readiness & efficiency when disasters hit.

Challenge

With its already fragile infrastructure, Haiti in general & specifically this mountain community, faces even greater health & economic challenges in emergencies & natural disasters. Currently, the community is ill-equipped to effectively respond to natural disasters. C2C instituted the Collaborative Response in 2020 for COVID-19. We now expanded it to all natural disasters & pandemics. Isolated from the capital, 600 vulnerable families are at the highest risk with the current Cholera outbreak.

Solution

The mountain community will create response packets to prevent the Cholera spread & purchase water purification tabs. Packets will include gloves, masks & soap for 600 families. We will provide the medical team on the ground with cholera prevention materials & flyers to hold water purification training for two Peasant Associations who will educate their communities on current cholera prevention & treatment. The associations will work together to stock items & prep for future emergencies.

Long-Term Impact

The Emergency Response Initiative will immediately impact 600 families. It will position this mountain community to routinely respond to emergencies & disasters and empower them to exercise greater ownership over their communities' health outcomes. Adapting, adjusting, and evolving allows this community to continue on the road to self-sufficiency. This effort is critical to their pursuit of health, well-being & sustainable development. The long-term impact can serve 1200 families.
