Age Action’s Getting Started programme helps older people build confidence using digital technology, supporting them to stay connected and independent in an increasingly online world. Getting Started is a free digital literacy programme and was the first competency-based digital training for older people in Ireland, built on the EU’s DigComp framework.
Participants are matched one-to-one with a volunteer tutor and meet for two hours a week over five weeks, focusing on the skills that matter most to them, at a pace that suits their needs.
Bridie, who joined the programme last year, wanted to learn how to use her smartphone more confidently. Before starting, she relied on family members to help her book appointments and send messages. Over the five weeks, she learned how to use email, WhatsApp, and basic online services safely. “Now I don’t feel stuck waiting for someone else to help me,” Bridie said. “I can do things myself, and that feels really good.”
Stories like Bridie’s show how digital skills can make a real difference to everyday life. With the support of our donors, Age Action’s Getting Started programme continues to help older people gain confidence, reduce isolation, and feel more included in the digital world.
