Cholera has broken out in the Lower Artibonite and Central Departments of Haiti. PIH/Zanmi Lasante are treating patients, actively finding cases, educating communities, and preventing further spread.
A cholera epidemic has broken out in the Lower Artibonite region of Haiti. More than 200 deaths and 2,670 cases have been reported. The majority of cases are at the St. Nicholas Hospital in St. Marc, where PIH operates. PIH is triaging about 600 new patients at this hospital. PIH has rushed clinical reinforcements and supplies to the region and has mounted a massive community education and mobilization campaign, and is working to prevent the spread of the outbreak to Port-au-Prince.
With the Ministry of Health, PIH operates 3 hospitals in the area hardest hit by the outbreak. PIH is providing 24/7 medical treatment, bringing clean water to rural communities, & running a massive community outreach campaign to prevent the spread.
PIH will continue to be engaged in community-based water projects as we have been for decades in the Central Department. We will also advocate for money pledged for the reconstruction of Haiti be used to strengthen the public water infrastructure.
