Haiti Cholera update-escalating instability

By Kristen Jenkinson | Manager of Community Giving

On behalf of all our staff and patients, thank you for your generous giving to Partners In Health! We are so grateful for your partnership.

The cholera outbreak that struck Haiti threatened lives, especially those of the most vulnerable like malnourished children.

In recent weeks, worsening political instability has created conditions where, again, cholera can return. The situation is the worst we‘ve seen in the past four decades we’ve been working in Haiti. Photos and soundbites in the news do not capture the breadth of the crisis and the extent of the collateral damage. PIH hospitals have remained secure; however, other hospitals in Haiti have been attacked and looted, and basic drugs and supplies can’t reach the facilities and patients that need them. Violence continues with more people getting shot, including bystanders.

We are fortunate to share that all our patients and staff at our sites are safe; safety will remain as usual our top priority.

Despite this unprecedented situation, our dedicated staff is committed to overcoming urgent challenges to maintain essential clinical services, and provide mental health, housing and food support. We are challenged with access to fuel and essential supplies as the ports and airports are currently inaccessible. In recent days, our supply chain team has delivered enough fuel to power major health facilities for a short time, however this still leaves us short of our needs. Our major health facilities have reduced fuel consumption by a quarter, by shutting down equipment for nonessential services. We are taking every step possible to be prepared to move goods and materials as soon as it is feasible and hope to share an update soon.

Our Zanmi Lasante (as Partners In Health is known in Haiti) colleagues are still heroically saving lives, accompanying patients, and providing training to medical students to strengthen the public health system of Haiti.

Your transformative gift could not have come at a more important time for PIH. Our community is in need of more care than ever. On behalf of our staff and patients in 11 countries worldwide, thank you for choosing to support Partners In Health!
