This project focuses on children as a priority target group since drowning is regrettably prevalent amongst children in Liberia. It specifically aims to minimize or reverse such unnecessary death of children by drowning. Lifesaving-Liberia, Inc. has targeted two hundred and fifty (250) school-age children from fifteen slum communities in Monrovia who are at higher risk of drowning to be taught swimming, self-rescue, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide water safety education.
Children are mainly vulnerable to drowning in every part of the world. In Liberia, some major factors for this are: 1. Monrovia being one of the wettest cities in the world, about 5000 children living in its slum communities are at greater risk of drowning due to lack of swimming skills and supervision. 2. Most of our aquatic recreational facilities are not supervised by lifeguards which poses a risky condition for users of these facilities thereby increasing the rate of drowning of children.
Lifesaving-Liberia, Inc. will conduct six months swimming, self-rescue and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training to develop the skills of two hundred and fifty (250) school-age children from fifteen slum communities in Monrovia. Those that are trained will be able to swim independently, perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and save themselves or others in an aquatic emergency.
Lifesaving-Liberia, Inc. will encourage the involvement of the community leaders to promote drowning prevention, water safety education and water safety practices at the community level. This joint effort by Lifesaving-Liberia, Inc. and the community to raise awareness on and ensure the prevention of childhood drowning, will considerably reduce the rate of drowning as those already trained will share the knowledge with others and or peers.
