Challenge

Since the outbreak the civil war in March 2011, an estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring countries as well as Europe. For the millions who have fled, hundreds of thousands are children, most of them under 11, making them more susceptible to disease and infection. Many of these refugees are currently undertaking the dangerous trek through Europe, passing through countries on the way and in need of support and medical assistance.

Solution

Project HOPE began responding to the Syrian Refugee Crisis since 2013 and has since shipped more than $100 million of donated medicines, helping displaced children, women and men living in refugee camps in Turkey. Now, with millions of refugees seeking aid in Europe, countries like Macedonia are working to provide safe shelter and assistance. Project HOPE is working with the Ministry of Health and partners in Macedonia to provide medicines and medical supplies to facilities and refugee camps.

Long-Term Impact

With more than 6,000 refugees traveling through Macedonia per day, Project HOPE's staff in the region will continue to coordinate with government officials to enable HOPE to provide medicines and assistance where it is most needed and implement an effective, long-term humanitarian response.
