Hello,
Thank you for your ongoing support of Humane Canada as we raise awareness to end puppy mills and improve the welfare of our canine companions.
We are once again gearing up for an online campaign, Tails of Summer, to raise awareness about puppy mills and dog welfare in our country. Canada is making improvements for animals but we still have a long way to go, including the number of puppy mills in our provinces. Puppy mills are high-volume breeding operations that are often unsanitary and inhumane. We estimate that there are thousands of active puppy mill breeders across Canada, many of which are difficult to uncover because they are located in rural areas.
Humane Canada will once again be highlighting these issues during the Tails of Summer campaign, as well as other issues affecting dogs in our country. Post-pandemic surrender rates continue to cause challenges for SPCA's, Humane Societies & rescues. Many of our members are reporting record high numbers and over capacity as animal adoptions have decreased and the number of animals coming through their doors have increased. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the demand was high for puppies as people were working from home and looking to add a dog to their family. This led many to unknowingly buy from puppy mills, who have a history of breeding dogs with health issues and ailments. With the rise of inflation and decrease in access to affordable veterinary care, a lot of these dogs with health concerns are being turned over to shelters, causing over capacity and strain.
It is important to understand how to recognize a puppy mill and inhumane breeding. Humane Canada offers a “What to Know Before Getting A Dog” toolkit on our website, which highlights ways to spot and avoid puppy mills and choose legitimate, safe breeders or rescues. We are also working on a Humane Hub, an upgraded website and education centre to further offer resources to the public and our members.
Thank you so much for your continued support of Humane Canada, we are so thankful for your advocacy for dog welfare in our country.
