July is Lost Pet Prevention Month and every year, thousands of beloved pets go missing, but many of these heartbreaking situations can be prevented.
One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your pet is to make sure they're properly identified. Up-to-date ID tags help lost pets get home faster, often without ever needing to enter a shelter. That's less stress for frightened animals, a quicker reunion for families, and fewer pets taking up valuable shelter space, allowing shelters to focus their resources on animals who truly have nowhere else to go.
Humane Canada works alongside humane societies and SPCAs across the country to strengthen animal welfare through collaboration, advocacy, national standards, and programs that help shelters provide the best possible care for animals in their communities. When shelters are supported, animals and the people who love them benefit.
This Lost Pet Prevention Month, you can help build a stronger animal welfare system. Thanks to our partner DocuPet, every donation made this month will be matched, doubling your impact in support of Humane Canada's work with shelters and animal welfare organizations across Canada.
Simple steps like securing fences and gates, practicing leash safety, and keeping cats indoors or in secure outdoor enclosures, such as catios, can go a long way in preventing pets from getting lost. If they do wander, proper identification, like ID tags and up-to-date microchips as a back up, can make all the difference in bringing them home quickly.
Here is to a safe and happy summer for you and your companion animal(s)!
