Hello,
Rising costs are putting enormous pressure on families, and many are struggling to care for their beloved pets. While being a pet guardian does involve financial responsibility, no one should have to choose between meeting basic needs and keeping their companion by their side. That’s why Humane Canada is taking action to create meaningful change by:
Making sure pets have access to Affordable and Accessible Food through our National Pet Food Bank
Urging decision-makers to expand Pet-Inclusive Housing options across the country
Strengthening networks between shelters nationwide to give more animals the chance to find loving homes
Here is the story of Mia and Her Dog:
When rent skyrocketed and groceries became a luxury, Mia tried everything to make ends meet. She skipped meals, picked up extra shifts, and sold personal belongings. But when vet bills and pet food became unaffordable, Mia faced an excruciating choice. Tears streaming down her face, she brought Charlie to the local shelter—a place overflowing with pets just like him, victims of circumstances beyond their families’ control. Mia’s story is not unique; it is the reality faced by thousands of pet parents from coast to coast.
These initiatives are the heart of Humane Canada's mission; to foster love without limits, so that every member of the family, human or animal, has access to care, food and housing. Because these issues are not just affecting us, they are affecting our pets too.
Your gift will help us address this crisis and help those most in need.
Our member shelter Montreal SPCA spoke with CBC News about the devastating 32 percent increase in animal surrenders due to the cost of living crisis affecting people who cannot afford to care for their pets. Sophie Gaillard, Director of Animal Protection, Legal and Governmental Affairs said:
"These are really gut-wrenching scenes for us to witness ... on a daily basis, people who arrive at the SPCA in tears, in distress," Gaillard said."They are forced to surrender a family member, essentially, just to be able to put a roof over their heads. It's really an inhumane decision that we should not be forcing people into."
Every step we take because of your support, brings us closer to a future where all pets are safe, loved, and cared for, and their family does not have to choose between the love of a companion animal and life’s necessities.
We are so grateful to you for your continued support of Humane Canada.
