Dear Supporter,
We are writing to share a heartwarming and poignant story that underscores the profound impact of your support on the lives of children and families affected by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
The Volochek Family's Journey
Before the war, the Volochek family led a life much like any other. Both Yuri, aged 8, and Ira, aged 3, were born healthy, and Yuri was preparing to start school. Their mother, Olga, worked as a nail technician in Kyiv, while little Ira had just started walking and was beginning to talk.
On February 24, their world changed drastically. As the bombing began, the family fled to Olga's parents' home in the countryside, seeking safety. However, the conflict soon reached even this refuge. Olga and her children attempted to escape on foot, with Ira in her arms, but were confronted by a Russian tank. The tank stopped beside them, its gun aimed directly at the family.
A Mother's Prayer
In that terrifying moment, Olga prayed to God, closed Yuri's eyes, and held Ira so tightly that the little girl burst into tears. Miraculously, the tank turned around and drove away, sparing their lives.
The Aftermath and Seeking Help
The trauma of these events had a profound effect on Ira. She stopped talking, only making sounds similar to mooing. She became nervous and started experiencing tremors and mild seizures. After the liberation of Makariv and nearby villages, the family returned home and sought help at the Little Lighthouse.
The therapist at the Little Lighthouse referred Ira to a neurologist, who diagnosed her with impaired neuro-physiological development due to stress. With ongoing support and care, Ira’s seizures have decreased, and she has started to show interest in the people and objects around her. Remarkably, she has begun to say some short words.
A Brighter Future
Yuri and Ira continue to attend the Little Lighthouse, where they receive the care and support they need. Yuri regularly attends Sunday school at the church with Ira and their mother, finding a sense of community and hope for the future.
