Summary

In mid-May 2020 Cyclone Amphan- the worst cyclone in 20 years- hit West Bengal. Already suffering from effects of the coronavirus, the region lost water and electricity mains, homes were destroyed and areas became unsafe. Karuna has long-term links with communities in West Bengal, supporting marginalised groups such as girls at risk of violence, children with disabilities and daily wage labourers. We are receiving regular updates from partners of the urgency for food parcels and health kits.

Challenge

Poor communities in West Bengal were already struggling for food, water, and other essentials due to the effects of the coronavirus in the region. Cyclone Amphan created devastating damage for around 2,000 families in the communities we serve. Electricity has been cut off in places, homes that were already precariously structured have been destroyed or severely damaged. Food has become more scarce and in some areas clean water is hard to find.

Solution

Our partners have strong and effective links in rural villages of West Bengal. Families require urgent food parcels and materials to help rebuild people's homes. Funds to this project will provide crisis response and will get support against the coronavirus back up and running. This dual crisis is the worst our partners have experienced in their communities. Basic recovery at this time, through aid provision, is essential for people's survival.

Long-Term Impact

Helping communities meet their day to day survival through food and shelter is essential at this time. Following stabilisation of this, we can re-assess the needs for recovery from the effects of the coronavirus.
