Remansito is a community with scarce resources, situated on low ground near the River Paraguay. The city suffers periodically from flooding during the rainy season, and such incidents have previously forced up to 300,000 people to evacuate their homes. We founded and continue to run the Remansito Community Center, facilitating access to food, healthcare and education for over 1,300 children and their families, during times of flooding and beyond.
We have insufficient funds to allow us to work with all the children in the area, most urgently to provide nutritional supplements and healthcare. Currently we are working with around 20% of the children in the area, and their families, but we would like to be able to reach 100% of those families with children.
By providing disaster relief including food, healthcare, and other urgently needed items, we can help these children and their families recover from the floods and get their lives back on track. In this way we can help them focus on getting an education, and hopefully enable them to enact long term change within the community.
In the short term, we will take care of the nutritional and healthcare needs of the children attending the Community Centre during periods of flooding, with the goal of preventing school dropouts and encouraging them to keep returning to the centre. This way they can reap the long term benefits of education, as well as taking part in the other programs we offer at the centre such as family planning advice, drug education, and psychological assistance to victims of domestic violence.
