Summary

This project will facilitate the care and maintenance of rescued manatees (a.k.a Sea cows) housed in a sanctuary located at Calabar, Nigeria. The sanctuary offers permanent home for ten (10) manatees that have either been victims of ships and speed boat accidents, or handicapped due to lack of vision because of old age which puts them in danger in their current habitat. These manatees have overcome great hardship, pain and trauma, and need a life-time of care to prevent them from extinction.

Challenge

Each year, Manatees (Sea cows) experinece a decline in population In Nigeria. The International Union for Conservation of nature (IUCN), classified Manatees as "Vulnerable" in its Red-list for threatened species. There is a dire need to preserve, rehabilitate and care for these vulnerable species. Without our help Manatees in Nigeria would soon go extinct.

Solution

Wilsons Wildlife Conservation Centre advocates for the preservation, rehabilitation and care of vulnerable and endangered animals that have either been injured by human activities or deformed due to old age. We will preserve the Manatees in a large equipped artificial professional sanctuary and provide food, medication and care for them. We will also educate the public about these vulnerable species to mitigate indiscriminate abuse of these animals.

Long-Term Impact

The project is a mix of wildlife conservation, community engagement and community based education on the importance of Manatees. The project will not only preserve manatees, it will also transform the way local communities value their natural resources and ecosystem well into the future. By educating the community, efforts to preserve these vulnerable species in their natural habitat will be intensified. You can provide a professional sanctuary, food and medical care for threatened wildlife.
