I am delighted to share Pelorus Foundation’s 2025 Impact Report with you, highlighting the incredible difference your generosity has made over the past year.

Thanks to your support, Pelorus Foundation has continued to help protect the rarest rhino on Earth by working alongside our trusted local conservation partner in Indonesia, Ofora Trust. Together, we are supporting the frontline teams working to protect the last remaining Javan rhinos in their only wild home, Ujung Kulon National Park.

In the attached report, you’ll find this work featured on page five, showcasing how your generosity helped provide essential field equipment to rangers and community volunteers.

Your gift has helped buy essential equipment including boots, socks, and machetes for more than 100 frontline rangers. Additionally, your support has also helped buy mobile phones for ranger leaders, helping to strengthen communication, patrol capacity and day-to-day protection across a remote and challenging rainforest landscape.

The urgency of this work could not be clearer. Once widespread across Southeast Asia, the Javan rhino now survives only in Ujung Kulon National Park, with recent global estimates suggesting that around 50 remain.

As Ujung Kulon National Park explains in the report:

“The Javan rhino survives in only in Ujung Kulon National Park, and is the rarest of the rhino species. These secretive, forest-dwelling animals face threats from illegal hunting, habitat encroachment, forest loss, and poverty among local communities.”

In 2025, donations to Pelorus Foundation supported practical protection where it is needed most. Early monitoring has already recorded camera-trap footage and field signs of rhinos returning to restored areas, alongside new calves documented.

Recent updates also show why this work matters. In January 2026, camera traps recorded a Javan rhino mother and calf in Ujung Kulon, a hopeful sign for a species living so close to the edge. Alongside field protection, our project partner has also continued awareness activities with local students and communities, helping build pride, knowledge and long-term support for the Javan rhino’s survival.

Newborn Javan Rhino calf, a new hope

Dear Supporters,

Last September, I had the privilege of travelling to Ujung Kulon National Park in Indonesia, the last place on Earth where the Javan Rhino still survives. With fewer than 80 individuals remaining, this is one of the most urgent conservation challenges of our time.

I joined a collaborative group of conservationists, local NGOs, and government representatives, meeting with the Head of Ujung Kulon National Park and Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry to understand both the challenges and the opportunities ahead. What stood out most was the shared commitment: protecting this species will only be possible through strong partnerships and coordinated action.

On the ground, the reality is stark. Rangers are working across a vast and difficult landscape with limited resources, facing threats from poaching, habitat pressure, and restricted access to real-time monitoring.

For the first time, Pelorus Foundation supported this effort by providing essential equipment directly to those protecting the rhinos, including boots, socks, and machetes for over 100 rangers and community volunteers, as well as mobile phones for ranger leaders to improve communication in remote areas. These are simple tools, but in a place where resources are scarce, they make a meaningful difference to daily protection efforts. They serve the crucial task of tackling the invasive Arenga palm which suffocates the Javan Rhino's natural food sources.

What gives us hope is that this collective work is already showing signs of impact. In 2025, multiple new calves were recorded in the park, reflecting the importance of sustained protection efforts. And just weeks ago, a newborn Javan Rhino calf was captured on camera with its mother, the first recorded birth of 2026.

This moment is incredibly powerful. It reminds us that when habitats are protected, when rangers are supported, and when organisations come together, recovery is possible, even for a species on the brink.

There is still so much to do. From strengthening ranger capacity to improving monitoring systems and securing the wider landscape, this is a long-term commitment. But standing in that forest, meeting the people behind this work, I felt something very clear:
