Armenia is way behind regional and developed countries benchmarks: 35% of school students are not able to read and understand a short text for 10 y.o.. In developed countries the share is 2-7%, in Georgia and Azerbaijan 14% and 23% correspondingly. Apart from that, there are also 42$ of population who live in poverty. It means Human Capital is under a huge danger. [World Bank data] Zartnir will purchase great books and organize reading clubs in 20 schools and engage 400 school students.
Why we do Zartnir: 1. Human Capital is supposed to be the main driving force of Armenia, however when 35% of school students are not able to understand a text, the country's prosperity is under a huge threat. In developed countries share is 2-7% 2. A huge amount of people are not able to provide basic education: around 42% of Armenian population lives in poverty [World Bank, 2021]. It is proven that people with less financial capital are less likely to get access to high quality education.
We will purchase great books that are important to read at school students age and organize reading clubs. Students will receive books, read at home and discuss them with a school teacher on weekly basis using interactive tools. They will also do debates and write essays. Thanks to discussions with classmates, students develop critical thinking It is scientifically proven that reading and reading clubs themselves improve school students academic score, EQ, vocabulary, spread tolerance, and etc.
Zartnir aims to be in >95% of schools of Armenia. That means development not only of direct beneficiaries-students who participate in Zartnir-but their siblings, parents, and others, which helps to create thinking, tolerant, ready to discuss culture in the society. Scientific research show that students who read have higher earnings in their later life. That also means that Zartnir will have an impact on decrease of poverty rate and Armenia's GDP growth in the years to come.
