Background:
Following the twelve-day war between Iran and Israel in June 2025, the Iranian regime began deporting Afghans en masse from Iran in a cruel and inhumane manner. Afghans were rounded up from the streets, schools, work and their homes and transferred to the Iran-Afghan border for deportations. Hazaras, due to their recognizable Asiatic/Turkic features, bore the brunt of the regime’s brutal campaign than Afghans of Pashtun and Tajik backgrounds who resemble Iranians. Thousands of children and elderly were separated from their families and left without food, water and shelter in the scorching heat at the border…
To divert attention from their setbacks in the twelve-day war and to instigate and further fuel nationalistic sentiments among the Iranian population that has increasingly become xenophobic towards Afghans over the past decades, the regime accused Afghans, particularly the Hazaras, of spying and collaborating with Israel. This worked temporarily in the regime's favor as the Afghan deportations had wide support among the Iranian population. As a result, the deportations continued.
By early January this year, major protests had erupted as the Iranian people are overwhelmingly against the current regime, and unhappy with the clerical rule. The regime resorted to brutal crackdown… and by now there is a full scale war between the US, Israel and Iran.
Bamyan’s Aid Assistance:
Following the humanitarian crisis at the Afghan-Iran border due to the forced displacements and deportations, our team created a fundraiser on GlobalGiving: https://goto.gg/f/70400. With your generous support, we raised an amount of USD 4,964. Bamyan contributed USD 2,862 to make it a total of USD 7,826. To be precise, USD 7,194 was allocated for the Afghans deported from Iran and USD 632 was allocated for the late Hazara athlete Ali Reza Asahi’s family via a separate fundraiser (see below).
Between September and December 2025, our team distributed our modest assistance as follows:
Widows and their children
Families with ailing or disabled members
Families seeking shelter in camps and local mosques
The Taliban were monitoring the community aid programs and not allowing photos and videos inside the camps. The families requested anonymity and to delay our report. According to our team on the ground, our modest assistance brought rare smiles to orphans, widows and those in poor health. With the cash assistance, they were enabled to focus on their urgent needs, such as food, water, medicine and bus tickets to go to their native villages.
Earlier in 2025, we had organized a separate fundraiser (https://goto.gg/f/60400) for the family of the late Ali Reza Asahi, a Hazara bodybuilding champion who had unexpectedly lost his life. We raised USD 316 and Bamyan matched 100% with USD 316 to make it a total amount of USD 632.
With grattitude,
Timor + the Bamyan Foundation team
