Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary is expanding into the Mountainlands Nature Reserve (MNR), part of Barberton Nature Reserve (BNR), increasing our protected area to 20,000 hectares. Situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, this range expansion project is vital for supporting the growing rhino population and enhancing the protection of biodiversity. Our vision is to create a harmonious landscape where wildlife and local communities thrive together.
Our Range Expansion Project confronts several challenges: outdated fences needing upgrades and electrification for enhanced security, the necessity of buffer zones to protect wildlife from old mine shafts, the need for additional ranger pickets to bolster operations and surveillance, an urgent requirement for advanced monitoring technology like rhino collars and cameras, and the demand for more trained and equipped anti-poaching units to ensure effective operations.
Care for Wild and the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency have devised an Integrated Co-Management Plan for Mountainlands Nature Reserve, vital for long-term rewilding and conservation success. Initiatives include upgrading the boundary fence, installing buffer fences, establishing extra ranger pickets, introducing advanced monitoring technology, deploying additional trained units and operational support. These measures aim to secure rhino habitats and protect thriving wildlife populations.
Expansion into Mountainlands Nature Reserve (20,000ha) establishes a robust foundation for rhino conservation and broader biodiversity preservation. This project creates sustainable employment through conservation, community development, and eco-tourism. The protection of the area's geological and ecological richness aligns with global conservation goals like the 30x30 Campaign and helps mitigate the impact of climate change. A Living Landscape.
