Mountainlands Rhino Update: Progress on the Path to the Wild
Over the past few months, the rewilded rhinos at Mountainlands have continued to make encouraging progress. With growing confidence, they are beginning to explore further, an important sign of adaptation and natural behaviour returning. These are the early, careful steps in reclaiming their independence in the wild.
While this expansion of their range is exciting to witness, it also brings increased responsibility. Because the rhinos are still in the rewilding phase, monitoring remains as critical as protection. Our dedicated rhino monitors use advanced tracking collars to follow the rhinos’ movements across this vast landscape. These collars have proven invaluable, not only helping to ensure their safety from external threats but also allowing us to observe their habits, health, and interactions as they adjust to their new environment.
To keep up with the rhinos’ growing confidence and wider range, the protection and monitoring team has also grown. Additional boots on the ground now allow us to cover more territory and respond faster when needed. This expanded human presence is backed by trap cameras and drone surveillance, giving us eyes in hard-to-reach places and allowing for real-time responses to potential threats or emergencies.
Every moment tracked, every sign observed, every movement recorded helps us tailor the support each rhino needs as they take this next step toward full independence. Rewilding is not a single event, it is a process of gradual release.
Thank you for walking this journey with us. Your support makes this pioneering work possible, giving these rhinos a second chance at a truly wild life.
