April 2026 Report

By Petronel Nieuwoudt | Founder & CEO

Thank you for your continued support of the Protect Mountainlands project. Your commitment is helping to secure and protect a vast, wild landscape where rhinos and other threatened species can not only survive, but truly thrive.

This project represents something deeply important, creating space for wildlife to live freely again, while building a future that supports both conservation and local communities. Every step forward is made possible because of your ongoing support.

Expanding a Living Landscape

Following the successful reintroduction of rhinos to Mountainlands last year, this new chapter continues to unfold with the introduction of three additional white rhino cows since January. Each of these females is a rehabilitated and rewilded orphan, now returning to a protected wild space where they can play a role in building a thriving population. To support their transition, they are currently being held in temporary bomas, allowing them time to acclimatise to their new environment, its sounds, scents, and seasonal conditions.

In the coming weeks, the bomas will be opened, giving them full access to the reserve. As is often the case, they will likely remain close to the bomas at first, gradually gaining confidence as they begin to explore further into the landscape. Nearby rhinos have already shown curiosity, visiting the new arrivals and beginning the natural process of integration. These early interactions are an encouraging sign as this growing population starts to establish itself within the reserve.

A Foundation for the Future

The expansion into Mountainlands Nature Reserve, spanning over 20,000 hectares, represents a significant step forward in securing a safe and sustainable future for rhinos. More than just a protected area, this landscape forms part of a broader vision, one that supports biodiversity conservation, protects critical ecosystems, and contributes to global efforts such as the 30x30 campaign. By safeguarding this space, the project also plays an important role in strengthening ecological resilience in the face of climate change.

Your support is helping to turn this vision into reality. Together, we are not only protecting rhinos, but restoring a landscape where life can flourish for generations to come.

Thank you for standing with us and for being part of this journey to protect and preserve one of South Africa’s most important wild spaces.
