The Himalayan town of Manali has no hospital for the 2000+ stray animals that roam its streets. We travel by motorbike treating animals as best we can, but we need to set up a dedicated hospital to rescue the animals suffering from major health issues & human inflicted abuse. Supporting this project will help us to set up a hospital, build kennels for the rescued animals, obtain a much-needed ambulance and life-saving diagnostic equipment, such as an x-ray, ultrasound, and blood analysers.
Manali and its surrounding villages in northern India has approx. 2000 stray dogs/cats. The nearest vet college is a gruelling 183km/5.5 hours away, along mountain roads. With no vet clinics with diagnostic equipment, or that even allow overnight stays for animals, the sick & injured stray animals must remain on the street receiving the most basic treatment. Dogs with untreated broken legs hobble around, puppies die of parvo, & untreated wounds become maggot infested.
Manali Strays is creating a hospital with diagnostics (x-ray, ultrasound, blood analysers, etc) to treat the stray animals in need. Animals will be rescued off the street, treated, and remain at the hospital until fully recovered, When healthy, all dogs and cats will be sterilised, vaccinated against rabies, and returned to their home territory, where a carer/feeder will be arranged to take responsibility for the animal.
Once a hospital for stray animals is available, community members will be able to alert us to animals that require rescuing. They will learn more about having compassion for the stray animals, taking responsibility and caring for them. In addition, all dogs and cats will be sterilised, helping to reduce the overall stray animal population. Vaccination against rabies will help to curb the spread of this deadly disease among the street dogs, and prevent future human transmission.
