Cancer is on the rise globally and Sierra Leone is not an exemption. The health scene is deplorable and Cancer is believed to be close to an epidemic proportion. There is definitely benefit in early detection. This means offering treatment at a more favorable stage.
Due to the Ebola upsurge, Breast Cancer Patients have been denied access to our Doctor for further diagnosis, and or follow up treatment post-surgery. The national focus is on eradicating the Ebola virus. Over the past 6 (six) months, a significant number of our patients have passed away because they lack any medical attention.
Currently, the best option for survival post-surgery is out of country. Follow-up treatment as Sierra Leone lacks adjuvant therapy. Stigma is still the biggest challenge for Breast cancer victims.
We have engaged our volunteer Surgeon and he has agreed to commence practice in March. We are dealing with a back log on diagnosed patients awaiting surgery since July 2014.
Your support has helped to provide initial counselling, documentation and preparing patients for surgery (lab work). Thanks so much for your support - that is helping to restore lives.
It is a sad state of affairs for these Cancer patients. We are fervently hoping and praying that Ebola will soon be a thing of the past so that normalcy prevails again.
