Empowering 2000 Women, One Small Loan at a Time

Spoken English classes for our women groups

Our interns have recently initiated Spoken English classes for women at the Akshaya Tailoring Centre, creating a meaningful platform for learning, confidence-building, and personal growth. This initiative reflects the spirit of collaboration and community empowerment, where knowledge is shared not only as a skill but also as a tool for transformation. Many of the women attending the tailoring centre come from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, and while they possess strong technical skills in tailoring, they often lack confidence in communicating in English, which can limit their opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and social interaction. Recognizing this gap, our interns stepped forward to bridge it with dedication and enthusiasm.

The classes are designed in a simple, interactive, and practical manner, focusing on everyday communication rather than complex grammar. The women are encouraged to speak without fear of making mistakes, participate in role-plays, engage in group discussions, and practice real-life conversations such as introducing themselves, interacting with customers, and managing basic workplace communication. This friendly and supportive learning environment has helped reduce hesitation and increased participation. Over time, the women have begun to express themselves more confidently, demonstrating that learning is not limited by age or background when the right encouragement is provided.

Beyond language learning, the initiative is fostering self-esteem and independence among the participants. The ability to communicate in English often brings a sense of pride and opens doors to new possibilities. For women engaged in tailoring, it enhances their capacity to interact with clients, understand instructions, explore online markets, and even consider expanding their businesses. The classes also create a space for bonding, where women share experiences, support one another, and grow collectively. This sense of community is as valuable as the language skills they are acquiring.

For the interns, this initiative is equally transformative. By teaching and interacting closely with the women, they gain practical experience, cultural understanding, leadership skills, and a deeper appreciation of community engagement. It allows them to apply their academic learning in a real-world setting while contributing positively to society. The process nurtures empathy, patience, and communication skills among the interns themselves, making it a mutually enriching experience.
