In India, Project HOPE staff is continuing its fight against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) through Project UDAY – an intensive, five-year program, supported by Eli Lilly and Company. Through Project UDAY, a consortium of organizations, including Project HOPE, is working to establish a Healthcare Centre of Excellence for NCDs and implementing a comprehensive diabetes prevention and management program throughout the country.
In June and July, Project HOPE staff have been busy training community health workers and developing patient networks in the municipality of Sonipat, near New Delhi. The trainings focused on sensitizing community health workers on diabetes and hypertension prevention and management through engaging and interactive activities. One activity taught community health workers how to educate their communities on healthy eating choices by using traffic light signals and symbols. Local food items were grouped into three categories – “green light zone” for the healthiest foods, “yellow light zone” for foods to be eaten in moderation and the “red light zone” for foods to be eaten only occasionally.
The trainings have been held in both rural and urban areas of Sonipat and have been received very well by participating community health workers. Project HOPE is working to organize more of these sessions in Sonipat and Vishakhapatnam in order to continue preparing community health workers to spread awareness of the risks of NCDs and educate others on their prevention and management.
Thanks to you and your generous support, more individuals and communities will receive the education and support they need to prevent and manage NCDs, helping them to achieve a better quality of life!
