The Advocacy Project is seeking $5,000 to support a bold new academic program on transitional justice led by Nepali survivors of conflict. Under the direction of Dr Ram Bhandari, seen in the photo, survivors are launching a pilot program and course through Kathmandu University that will engage local and international students in study, field work, and advocacy. If successful, the program will enrich the field of human rights, renew interest in Nepal's peace process, and advance victims' agenda.
Survivors and victims of the conflict in Nepal have been ignored by the establishment in Nepal for years. As a result they continue to be denied justice twenty years after fighting stopped in 2006. The violent protests last September have created more victims and more social tension. It is imperative that the country finds a way out of the crisis and that survivors are part of the process. This will not just benefit Nepal, but make international human rights bodies more representative.
Survivors have launched a strong movement to engage with the establishment and pursue their own initiatives. As part of this, they are launching a new academic center for the study and practice of transitional justice at Kathmandu University from the perspective of survivors - the first of its kind. Dr. Ram Bhandari, the director, is a prominent academic and advocate. His team will start offering courses for local and international students this summer. We are seeking $5,000 to cover 2026 costs.
After the program is tested, Dr. Bhandari will expand it through his wide network of academic contacts. In time we expect the center to become a respected member of the human rights education community while benefiting an ever-widening pool of students and building support for survivors' goals. The program will offer direct engagement with victims and a society in transition - a fascinating educational experience that will gradually expand and enrich international human rights education.
