Winter 2018-2019 Update

By Kathi | Parent Volunteer

Winter is a more quiet time at the K4AK projects.  Unlike the U.S., our schools in Afghanistan close for the winter, instead of the summer, because most of the students don’t have the coats and boots necessary to walk the many miles from their homes to the school.  Construction slows down somewhat too.

We’ve had another successful school year.  The medical clinic continues to provide health services. Construction of the hospital and the second site continues, albeit a little more slowly in the winter snow.

The end of the school year in the U.S. is around the corner too.  This always reminds us of the hard work our U.S. students do year round, usually for many years, to raise money.  We asked one of our long time student volunteers, Natasha, to tell us what being involved in K4AK has meant to her.  She wrote:

Kids 4 Afghan Kids has been my way of giving back to the community since third grade. To me, it’s an amazing thing because of the impact it has made on so many people’s lives, and their stories will be forever changed because Kids 4 Afghan Kids decided to step in to give them a better future and a better life.

It is also important to me because of its sustainability. Unlike, say, packaging food that only has a short-term effect, Kids 4 Afghan Kids is focused on sustainable long-term projects to guarantee a better life for not just the people of today, but the kids and adults of tomorrow as well. We have built schools to educate the children and get them good jobs, a dentist’s office to improve hygiene, an orphanage to care for the orphans of their community, planted gardens and fruit/nut trees to feed malnourished families, and built a deep well so that the people of the village have access to clean water and can grow more crops.

I feel so lucky to have been blessed with the resources and opportunities to be able to help others the way Kids 4 Afghan Kids does. Being in Kids 4 Afghan Kids lets me participate in something that is bigger than myself and helps kids just like me have the chance of a happier and healthier future.

Natasha

We want to thank Natasha, and all the other students, for their help raising the money necessary to build and run the K4AK schools, clinic, orphanage, well and kitchen.  Our donors also deserve thanks for making it all possible.  We could not have done it without you!

You’ll get another GlobalGiving report from us in the spring.   We’ll be back in full swing and expect to have lots of progress to report!
