Rebuilding Strength After the Earthquakes: Supporting Women's Emotional Recovery

By Yasmina | Project Leader

Dear Supporter,

In the months following the devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria in February 2023, focused efforts were made to support the emotional and psychological recovery of women who were deeply affected by the disaster. Between May and June 2023, more than 200 women participated in a series of psychological support sessions designed to help them navigate trauma, grief, and the overwhelming stress of displacement and loss.

These sessions were delivered both in-person and online, ensuring that women across Gaziantep, Hatay, Idlib, and rural Aleppo could access the support they needed regardless of their location or circumstances.

The program offered a combination of group sessions and individual therapy, guided by specialized mental health professionals. Using a range of therapeutic approaches — including EMDR and CBT — participants received tools to process traumatic experiences, restore emotional balance, and build healthier coping mechanisms.

Beyond providing immediate psychological relief, this initiative strengthened long-term resilience and empowered women to rebuild their lives after one of the most catastrophic events the region has witnessed.

This comprehensive approach underscores the critical importance of addressing mental health in disaster recovery, especially for vulnerable women who often shoulder the heaviest burdens in times of crisis.

Thank you for standing with these women and helping restore hope where it was nearly lost.
Your support continues to make healing possible.

With gratitude,
