Some forms of harm remain hidden because no one knows how to name them.

Others remain hidden because people are afraid to respond incorrectly.

On the fifth day of the program, participants entered one of the most sensitive and necessary conversations in humanitarian work: gender-based violence.

They examined the different forms violence can take, the power dynamics that allow it to continue, and the ways conflict and displacement can increase women’s exposure to risk.

When legal protection is limited, families are separated, and community support systems break down, vulnerable women can become even more isolated.

But recognizing that violence exists is only the beginning.

Participants also learned how to respond safely, ethically, and without judgment. They explored protection-focused approaches, the importance of confidentiality, and how an inappropriate reaction—even when well-intentioned—can place a survivor at greater risk.

Before the training, many participants already had a general understanding of gender-based violence.

By the end of the session, their knowledge had improved by 31.2%—the highest improvement recorded across the entire program.

This result reflects more than increased awareness.

It shows that participants moved from simply recognizing violence to understanding how to support survivors responsibly, reduce harm, and guide them toward appropriate services.
