Challenge

In Mexico, many families are torn apart by the migration of one or both parents. The effects of migration on the children left behind are emotionally devastating and affect their development and possibilities to study. Children have trouble performing in school, act out, or become timid and withdrawn. In communities with high rates of migration, this program supports children in developing life skills and assists caregivers, teachers and health personnel to support these children.

Solution

The program will help to expand our successful Child Development Centers in Hidalgo to train more children, caretakers and teachers in life skills and health education needed to promote early education and health and to get educational and didactic materials that will be used to stimulate the development of the children left behind. The children who participate in Our Child Development Centers, are less aggressive and more disciplined, empathetic and sociable.

Long-Term Impact

Healthy nutrition and early stimulation of the children have a great impact on their physical, social and cognitive development. Through training parents, caregivers and teachers and with the expansion of Child Development Centers, Yo quiero Yo puedo (IMIFAP) will benefit the development of children and babies from 0 to 10 years, giving them an opportunity to succeed in society and education. The Centers promote the participation of the whole community in the nurturing of these children.
