Summary

More than 2 million people have been afflicted following the 7.0-magnitude earthquake on the 20th of April, 2013 in Ya'An, China, arousing memories of the devastating shock that killed tens of thousands in the same province in 2008. According to UNICEF, 26,000 children were seriously affected by this quake. This fund will help bring more public resources directly to the severely affected children, through supporting the frontline NGOs to provide flexible services to local communities.

Challenge

In the reconstruction after a major natural disaster, kids are the most vulnerable groups in need of care and assistance. During this earthquake, more than 200 people have been dead or missing, and 90% of houses are collapsed and damaged. After the urgent rescue, the affected kids and their family will need conscious assistance to remit the economic burden due to the massive property damage, yet they suffer even more from psychological stress, education deficiency, school insecurity, etc.

Solution

This fund will be directly used for local NGOs working in the frontline aiming to: 1: Protect post-disaster rescued children as orphans, handicapped children with special needs; 2: Help children recover from psychosocial stress; 3: Provide urgent community-based services. 4: Health and nutrition security, 5: Education recovery, school security

Long-Term Impact

Through supporting grassroots NGOs that specialize in helping children, this fund initiated by Shanghai United Foundation (SUF) would be able to have those most severely affected children and to supplement the lack of government work. Additionally, research done by the NGOs on the living conditions and exact needs for children in the earthquake-hit area could advocate the child welfare policy in local communities in the future.
