Greetings, generous supporters! Spring is in the air and we are feeling the energy of it as we begin our preparations to return to Perú in September. As we anticipated in our last report, we met with our two local partners, Amigo Fiel and Huanchaco al Rescate earlier this year to check in on local conditions post Covid surge and during some political upheaval in the southern part of the country. We were heartened to hear that life is returning to normal as the pandemic wanes and that there is stability in Huanchaco and the surrounding areas. Being given the greenlight to begin planning for our next on the ground activities, we asked both groups how we could best help them in this current context. They had many ideas that served as the impetus for our current planning process.
Recognizing that we may need a bit more time to coordinate our efforts both here in the United States and in Huanchaco, we chose the final week of September, September 25-30, for our in country visit. This year we have decided to take a smaller team and instead of leading with US veterinarians and vet techs, we will be working more closely with local veterinarians and helping to train area vet students. In essence, our core team will work with our partners from a schedule each of them has devised with community priorities in mind. For example, Amigo Fiel will be setting up learning exchanges between both Peruvian veterinarians and vet students and our lead vets. They are also interested in offering classes to guardians in the community so that caretakers can provide better day to day healthcare to their animals. In addition, Amigo Fiel is likely to prioritize a few difficult cases with companion animals, where families cannot pay for complicated diagnoses. On the other hand, Huanchaco al Rescate is interested in working with us to solidify their relationship with the municipality of Huanchaco, offer basic wellness exams and potentially do a few neuters.
In terms of next steps, the core team will be reaching out to a few additional folks who have been long time volunteers with the Perros Project to make sure we have enough people to have a true impact in 2023. While we are developing plans for the early fall, our local partners continue to advocate and care for the street dogs of Huanchaco. We have included pictures to illustrate two of the dogs whose lives they have touched.
Thank you once again for all of your support. We hope you feel as excited as we are about our return in 2023. Our next report Will contain more details so stay tuned!
Until then, happy spring, and be well!
Matt and Courtney
