Helping More Dogs, Building for 2027

Greetings, generous donors! It’s hard to believe that it’s already time to share our 3rd quarter update with you. We hope this message finds you well, enjoying the change of seasons wherever you might be. The last few months have been particularly important for our small organization, and we are excited to share our news with you.

Over the summer, a long time donor reached out to us, asking how he could best contribute a legacy gift in honor of his late wife. It has been a pleasure to correspond with him, coordinate with our two on the ground partner organizations, Huanchaco al Rescate and Amigo Fiel, and decide upon the most effective approach to using these precious funds. After some productive back-and-forth, we have decided to restart the annual week long spay and neuter clinics we began with in 2010 with some important changes. We are piloting two clinics, each run by one of our partner or organizations, but utlizing only Peruvian veterinarians, vet technicians, and vet students rather than an international team, which is much more expensive and less sustainable. Keep an eye out for our holiday fundraising to match this generous grant.

In terms of our tireless on the ground partners, Ursula at Huanchaco al Rescate has had her hands full with several new rescues who she is caring for at her shelter which is already housing 46 dogs. A brave rescuer was able to remove some dogs from a pig farm, where she was attacked by other dogs who were used to guard the farm. Ursula’s had to administer a fair amount of medication to treat that dog’s infections, but she is improving. Additionally, someone recently abandoned two dogs at the shelter (Photo 1), who Ursula is now trying to find homes for.

Bertha at Amigo Fiel reports that they have continued to use funds to vaccinate several dogs, continue a deworming program, perform sterilizations, and make emergency surgery possible for dogs who have suffered accidents. In her report, Bertha highlighted Tintin, a dog a little over a year old, who was severely malnourished and recently hit by a car. Dr. Luis Hernández operated on Tintin and while it was necessary to amputate part of his left hind leg, he is recovering well (photo 2).

Spring Report, 2026

Huanchaco al Rescate persists in its on the ground work to help the vulnerable and abandoned dogs of Huanchaco through a combination of rescue efforts, medical care, and daily support. Ursula shared a mix of recent highlights from rescuing and transporting an area dog who is currently receiving medical treatment, to the celebrating the birthdays of four rescued dogs (see photo), to providing much needed grooming and care for a schnauzer named Puki Puki.

Ursula continues to maintain housing for street dogs, especially the more vulnerable ones who otherwise would not survive. The photo below reflects her ongoing efforts to provide shelter for the dogs in a consistently challenging environment. Despite difficulties, she has enlisted community involvement and charted a course forward for the gradual improvement of not only the dogs she is sheltering, but all of the community dogs in Huanchaco. As part of her commitment to start puppies in her care on the best foot, she is sourcing protein rich meals from generous community businesses.

Our partnership with Amigo Fiel also continues to be fruitful. Bertha expressed great gratitude for the funds that have allowed the group to provide medical care, parasite treatment, food, and sterilization services to dogs in both Huanchaco and Trujillo. Amigo Fiel treated multiple groups of neglected and abandoned dogs suffering from flea and tick infestations, malnutrition, and uncontrolled breeding. Dogs including Kira, Lola, Zoe, Blanca, and Lulu were successfully spayed and are recovered well, while others such as Mia, Pamela, and Gringo are still awaiting surgery.

Their report also reflects cautious optimism about growing compassion within the community. Bertha notes increasing solidarity among residents who are helping rescue, foster, and care for animals in need, including dogs like Pelusa, who was abandoned while sick but has since recovered and is awaiting adoption. At the same time, she acknowledges that Amigo Fiel continues to face resource challenges as they regularly purchase the medications and surgical supplies needed to carry out necessary medical procedures and sterilization campaigns safely and effectively. 2025 Wrap-Up: You'll Wanna Read This!

Hello and happy new year to our wonderful supporters! We are so sorry that this report is coming to you later than usual, but we had many family and work obligations over the last several months and have only been able to turn our attention to this today. That said, we’re happy to report that our partners on the ground have been busy at work over the last quarter.

From the Huanchaco al Recate team:

Ursula continues to work with Dr. Manuel, who gives many of his services at a reduced cost for her shelter dogs. Specifically, he has helped her with the most recent sterilizing campaign as it is puppy season in the Southern hemisphere. When puppies are surrendered to the shelter, she works with Dr. Manual to have them dewormed and given their first round of vaccinations. Additionally, Ursula reported that a small dog was attacked by some other dogs and she was able to work with Dr. Manuel to provide treatment.

In addition to the veterinary services, Ursula has used donations to continue providing food, as well as make much needed repairs after the collapse of a wall at her shelter. While she had an additional worker covering many shifts at the shelter, that person recently left for family reasons, and Ursula returned to relying on volunteers and doing most of the work herself - a heavy lift. We admire her determination and persistence immensely and feel so lucky to work with her to protect the street dogs of Huanchaco.

From the Amigo Fiel team:

We recently received an extremely detailed report from Bertha, highlighting some of her favorite stories from this year, which were made possible by your financial support (check out the full report at: XXXXX). In total, Bertha tells us that in 2025, the Amigo Fiel team spayed and neutered approximately 600 dogs and cats, with a higher percentage being dogs.

One of those cases is the sweet Galilea, who is approximately 6yrs old and lives in a housing construction area near the Huanchaco roundabout. She has no family but is looked after by the construction workers. Galilea has had two litters of puppies before but most all of them died. The same thing happened on the last occasion, when 12 puppies were born, but only two females survived. After surgery and care from Amigo Fiel, she's been spayed, had a fully recovery, and now she and her two puppies will wait until they find their forever home.

Bertha also reported that one of the achievements she is most proud of this year was bringing new veterinarians onto their team, while simultaneously strengthening their relationships with the veterinarians they’ve worked with previously which has allowed them to work more efficiently.

In Closing:

There’s a lot going on inthe world at this moment, so much that it feels at times that one can’t make a noticeable difference. We’re so grateful to you (our supporters), and our wonderful teammates on the ground in Peru, for making a difference in each and every of these dogs.
